Architecture and Tiles in Taiwan, 1960–1980
From the 1960s to the 1980s, Taiwan experienced rapid economic growth and a surge in population.A large number of mixed-use shop houses, walk-up apartments, and government-led public housing projects were built during this period.The combination of concrete and ceramic tiles shaped a distinctive style in Taiwan’s postwar modernist architecture, balancing practicality with decorative expression.
Brightly colored and intricately patterned mosaic tiles could be seen everywhere—on walls, floors, bathrooms, and washbasins—capturing the aesthetics and daily details of life at the time.
1960 至 1980 年代，臺灣經歷經濟高速成長與人口快速擴張。各類店舖住宅、步登公寓，以及政府主導的國民住宅大量興建。混凝土與瓷磚的結合，形成戰後臺灣現代主義建築中兼具實用與裝飾特色的獨特風貌。 在這個時期的建築內外——從圍牆、地面，到浴室與洗手台——隨處都可見色彩鮮豔、圖案繁複的馬賽克磚，這些小巧拼花不僅具有防水、防潮功能，也承載著當時生活的美感與日常細節。
Technological Innovation and the Decline of Mosaic Tiles
By the 1980s, more advanced production equipment was introduced domestically, leading to the mass production of larger tiles such as quartz and slate tiles. Small mosaic tiles, which were costly to install and difficult to maintain due to numerous grout lines, gradually fell out of favor.
Once a ubiquitous sight, mosaic tiles have largely disappeared; most have been out of production for nearly half a century and are now rarely found in tile factories or building supply stores.
1980 年代後，國內引進更先進的生產設備，開始大量生產大面積石英磚與石板磚。由於小型馬賽克磚施工成本高、勾縫多清潔不易等原因逐漸被淘汰。
曾經隨處可見的拼花馬賽克磚，大部分已停產近半世紀，磁磚廠與建材行也難以購買到類似產品。
The Revival of Mosaic Tiles
Inspired by Taiwan’s early mosaic tiles, we have developed a unique handcrafting process for tile-making. Through study of form, glaze, and material, we aim to elevate the artistic and technical value of ceramic tiles.
In addition to offering small-batch, diverse, and customized services, we are also dedicated to expanding production. This allows mosaic tiles to transcend architectural use, finding new roles in home décor, installation art, cultural education, and beyond—bringing a renewed richness to everyday life.
以臺灣早期的馬賽克磚為靈感，我們創造了獨特的手工製磚工藝。基於對釉藥、造型和材料的分析，提升瓷磚的工藝價值和創作性。除了提供少量、多樣的客製化服務，也積極投入量產。希望讓馬賽克磚超越建築範疇，融入居家裝飾、裝置藝術、文化教育等領域，以多元面向豐富人們的生活。
